Draft Control with a Rear Rotary Mower

I am a new owner of a Kubota L3540 with a Farm King 6' Rear Rotary Mower.  The tractor handles the mower well.  The problem comes with rough terrain and the skids of the mower digging in to the point of spinning the rear wheels.  The manual solutions are to raise the mower over the high spot or run the mower at higher cut.  I would like to be able to run the mower low, 4" cut, as much as practical.

The question: Has anyone used Draft Control on a Rotary mower to automatically pick up the mower if it does start to dig in?  My Dealer say he has never installed Draft for a Rotary.  It seems to me it should work.

 

I don't think it would work for you. The draft will only kick in when the tractor really starts to pull hard on the attachment. The skid shoes from the cutter will be digging long before the tractor starts to lift the implement.

All you need to do is lower the rear wheels so your mower cuts at the height you are looking for and then raise the 3 point app. 3-4 inches higher, thus keeping the front out of the dirt.

   I bought a 6' offset mower a couple years ago and had the same problem. It was so bad that I actually bent the A-frame on the mower, not a perfect solution but it does help, I even had the draft control.

The rear wheel is set high right now. This was the recommended set-up for the lowest cut. I will try the lower back end set-up.

While the side mower can obviously give you large side loads while mowing straight ahead, I can get torsional loads on the three point if I turn too tight and the mower digs in. The side mower should have the same turning problem or worse!

Wow, bent the A frame.  No obvious damage so far, I think.  I have resorted to picking up the mower on the right angle turns and backing up. The HST makes it a fast operation.

With the front end raised I may be able to get away with a tighter turn.
