    new holland tz22 problem

Hoping someone can help.  Maybe you had a similar problem.  Bought the TZ22 with 50 hours.  It has a woods backhoe and std. loader.  Everything works great...until I work it staight for 2 or 3 hours.  This happens very repeatably.  I'm working at 2700-3000 for 2 or 3 hours when suddenly I lose power.  RPMs drop to below 1000, it vibrates like hell.  Usually it then starts surging back and forth between 1000 and 3000 with about a 10second cycle.  Sometimes the motor dies completely when it's at the low end.  If I give it any kind of load, it dies.  The only remedy I found is let it sit for a while then get back to work.  Dealer says check the fuel and try to loosen the fuel cap for proper venting.  My fuel is fine and loosening the cap doesn't help.

Does anyone have any ideas?  This is my first deisel motor and first tractor with complete hydraulics.

    Thanks,

    Joe  in CT.

Don't know where in CT you are, but did you actually change the fuel filters or just look at them? It sounds to me like your filters are clogging or something else in the fuel system. What dealer did you buy this from?

    Thanks.

I'm around middletown, ct.  I replaced both filters at 50 hrs.  It now has 78.  I bought it used.  It came from New Amsterdam NY originally.

today, I drained the bowl on secondary fuel filter again following the manual.  There was no water.  I also drained the tank and replaced with some from the gas station.  I also took off the fuel lines and injector lines and blew air through them.  All with no change.  w/ key ON, fuel is at the first cylinder line, when it's running good, there is fuel coming out of the last cylinder line as well going back to the injector manifold.  When the problem occurs, I notice when I turn the pump on without cranking there is no fuel coming out of the last cylinder line.  I think my pump is losing pressure when the motor gets hot.  Then it's running on 1 or 2 cylinders. Does this make any sense?

Yup... I'd keep working under the assumption that you have a fuel problem.

    Thanks,

Could the pump be bad after 78 hrs?  Can the pump be affected by the temperature?  Is it right to assume fuel should be coming out the lines when I run the pump with switch ON and the little ticking sound?

Yes and no... that pump is only used to help prime the fuel lines and provide some chance of starting the tractor again if you happen to run it out of gas. You can't assume that its going to provide enough pressure to purge the injectors if they have an air pocket in them.

The pump should run and fuel should flow if you have the power on and the lines unhooked. Its possible it burned up. If thats it, your in good shape. They are pretty inexpensive.

Two Guns, Help Me Explain This.   Could this be what they call  GOVENOR CHASING..The spring gets corroded, than when it gets hot it starts to loose tension. Just like oversteering. It starts to over supply than under supply fuel, causes engine to buck and shake then shuts down. Spring cools, engine starts then process repeats. Not familar with your throttle set up, so this may or may not apply. Good Luck   Frank

    Thanks guys,

Messicks got it right off the bat.  The filter was clogged and the motor was out of gas.  Amazing how it ran sometimes with no fuel coming in; hope I didn't hurt it.  I should have had more faith in the tractor and tracked the fuel on past the pump.  What a mistake; getting to the pump (via steering wheel Crying [:'(]   )  and disconnecting it only to find nothing getting IN.  I think I'll track fuel from the tank forward next time, good lesson, I guess.  Thanks, again.

    Re: new holland tz22 problem

I know this thread is several months old but since I had a similar experience I wanted to chime in. I have a 2005 TZ25 with about 40 hrs. I was bushhogging with 4'cutter. I experienced the exact symptoms you described. I had no idea what was going on. It was in warranty so I took it back to my dealer. Long story short...he emptied the deisel from the gas tank and said that it looked like it had algae growing on the surface of the diesel. The same green slime had clogged the first fuel filter mounted on the fender between the the rear tire and the fender. I could not imagine algae growing on diesel but apparently it's possible. The tractor had not been sitting for any extended period of time and was actually stored in my basement where there is a dehumidifier.

Another issue....it is really easy to let leaves, trash, etc clog up the air vents up front. The vacuum created by the radiator fan really holds trash in place. I've learned to keep an eye on the temp gauge and routinely shut down so that the trash falls away. I boiled that bad boy over one afternoon. Nothing like experience for a teacher!

    Welcome to the forum Halga.

Since you bumped the thread, I'll also mention my Dad had the same problem.  His was a clogged filter (the one behind the left rear tire).

I have a TZ22 and understand them to be almost the same motor with some exception to squeeze the 3 hp of the thing.. !   How do you keep the fuel from growing slime?

You can buy anti-alge additives to all the bacteria. This can also clog the filters though, as it will break loose any stuff thats already growing in the fuel tank. Lesson is to always keep some extra fuel filters on hand. Its the nature of diesel fuel.

THANKS,, I use regular over the rad diesel from the local mobil mart.. does that have any anit algea in it? I also just had my  25 hour service from new and had all filters and fluids changed. SO hopefully that will help.  Is the fuel filter available only from the Dealer?

Filters can come from the dealer... or here. http://www.messicks.com/TractorParts/NewHolland/TZ25DA.aspx

Bacteria and Alge is just a regular part of diesel fuel, its growth can be spured by heat or moisture. Typicaly most of your service station fuel should be treated for these things, but they often don't use any more additive than they need to.
