Strengths Great Tractor! It always starts. 4x4 makes it great for the snow and mud. Gearing selection for every application from plowing to moving down the road. I payed $4250, the guy i bought it from also threw in 2 new back tires and rebuild kits for the front loader cylinders.
Weaknesses The balance of the tractor when the bucket is full. it does not seem that stable. Driver compartment a little small for someone with size 13 shoes and 6foot1 tall.
Overall I use my 1982 4x4 (last year made) for everything at my house. I mow using brush hog and finish mower. Plow snow and dirt with the scraper blade and frontend loaded. load and unload palets with the bucket forks. I have even pulled stuck cars, tucks, and other tractors out with it.

Strengths I'm the guy who posted a review 07/03/2006. Since that time, my 1700 has continued to be a trooper. I've been using B50 biodiesel with no problems for the last three years. Still working great.
Weaknesses This year the water pump went out. It appears to be pretty common- and I found a water pump on ebay for less than $100. Did it myself- took a while- just remember to take out ALL the bolts holding the old one on.
Overall Overall I think it still is a great tractor value for the money. My 4K investment back in 2004 is still holding up well.

Implements : 6 foot finish mower. 4 foot brush hog. 6 foot blade. 100 gallon spray tank
Purchased From : auction
Strengths Great little tractor. Starts right up with a little help from the glow plugs. very little fuel useage. Drives very easy. pulls great could do better as I only have turf tires.
Weaknesses Parts a little hard to find. But not impossible. Added a short piece of threadall to the lift to ease the reach
Overall Use this tractor year around, Put 100 hourson it in the fall to pull a hay ride trailer, Some time there is a load of 1800-2000 lbs and the tractor has no problems pulling the load. Hardly uses any fuel. Can get my 4 foot brush hog any where I want.

Implements : 5' bush hog, 5' tiller, 5 ' rake, 6' harrow, 2 bottom plow, pasture restorer, 5' blade, planter
Purchased From :
Strengths Pulling power, 4 wheel drive, low maintenance (oil and battery), very low fuel usage, class 1 hitch.
Weaknesses Exhaust fumes due to muffler placement, troublesome to get in and out of. Needs some steering joints replaced and the throwout bearing is getting noisey but they can wait.
Overall I like it, can do close to the work of a 40 HP tractor in 4 wheel drive and is a very simple, uncomplicated, low operating cost piece of work. Have about 2200 hours on it, original tires, sits in a pole barn. Been on the same property since new.

Implements : 5’ brushhog, 5’ back blade, three point backhoe, log splitter
Purchased From : Independent Tractor sales
Strengths I like this tractor as it’s powerful enough for what I do on 5 acres mowing, snow removal, and moving gravel. I like the weight (has rear wheel weights). compared to what is on the market in newer tractors of this HP class. I’ve had no electrical problems but think it was stored indoors by the previous owner. Otherwise I think he abused in every other aspect. I have no real complaints attributable to design or construction.
Weaknesses Doesn’t have a live PTO so only turns when moving. Engine isn’t the most pleasing sound at startup but sounds fine at higher RPM. Power steering would be very nice to have as I enter geezerdom. Needs preheat to start well when cold. It has a 770 loader that I had to replace the control valve on and I’ve had to do some welding on the bucket. It had physical damage to the steering box from a tree falling and significant rim damage due to leaking calcium chloride. Replacement rim was $300. Parts do seem expensive but I have little reference for other brands or other Ford models. For example, the small side plate on the steering box (3.5” square) where the adjusting screw is located cost $141 at dealer. I found a brand new steering column shaft on Ebay for $212 delivered whereas the dealer wanted $550. Simple bearing with race for bottom of steering shaft is $60 from dealer. Holds about 24 quarts of transmission fluid which is expensive to change but easy to do.
Overall Purchase price is estimated without the backhoe which came with it (tractor, 770 loader, backhoe were $8500) with claimed 535 hours of use. This is my first tractor and these things are addictive-Best tool I’ve ever owned and I have plenty of tools. A very good 4X4 tractor given the vintage with plenty of power for a hobby farmer like myself. Good amount of mass for using the front loader. I hope obtaining parts does not become an issue but then isn’t every tractor of this or older vintage in the same boat? I guess I’ll find out. I did a half way decent paint job on her and posted the picture here.

Years of Use : 1-2 Years Use
Implements : 5' brush hog, 5' blade, loader attached
Purchased From : private seller
Strengths When I haven't managed to break anything, it is fantastic. The tractor I own is 4x4 - I've had it sink up to the axle in mud - put in 4 wheel, locked the diff and it walked out of the hole. It always starts and will run all day on a tank of diesel.
Weaknesses This unit was "worked hard" buy the previous owner(s) - the loader brackets crack and have to be welded a couple of times a year (I have a good welder and it's still a problem). Had to drill and tap the sub-frame mounts on one occasion, wathc for loose mounting bolts. Parts seem difficult to find.
Overall This is a fantastic compact tractor. Great for hobby farms or acreage. Will easily handle any implement within it's class. Accessary hydraulics are easily installed.

Implements : RM500 5 foot mower
Purchased From : used
Strengths I bought a Ford 1700, 1980 model, last year. I mow grass with a Woods RM500 5 foot mower. It starts easy if you let the glow plugs heat for 40 seconds. It's cranky if you don't give them enough time. Parts are ok, but not easy to find. I use fram filters, can't find the OEM ones easily.
Weaknesses My tractor has seen a lot of outdoor storage, so it's not in the best shape. Paint is poor now, and I've had some electrical problems to overcome. I've had to use the wiring diagrams from the ITT shop manual to try and rewire some things. Plus, the fuse panel was pretty corroded with time, and I had to replace. The headlight bulbs (real odd ones) can be found on ebay. I had to hunt to find oil and fule filters, found them on Wix site, and also cross referenced to fram products.
Overall A great value. I mow about six acres every week, and the 1700 and five foot mower makes about the right combination for me. Level land. Price will vary with condition. I've seen them in the low 4K range for a 2WD, up to high 8K for a really nice 4WD model with loader. Mine is a 1980 model, with 2WD. PTO is not live, it only operates when in motion.

Implements : 5' finish mower, 7' sickle mower, blade
Purchased From : Sellers Equip., Siloam Spg., AR
Strengths Economical, 1/2 gal. diesel per hr., low maintenance. In 25 yr. I have replaced a water pump and a few parts to the steps. It has original tires, 12 spd fwd, 4 rev, maybe replaced battery about 4-5 times
Weaknesses The factory seat bolted direct and had to go. Universal seat worked with some effort, but rides nicely. Could have used pwr. steer, but is not bad, the 1710+ models have it.
Overall If it was 45 hp. it would be my only tractor, I could not ask for better service. Will out pull an N series tractor I know, and do it on one-half the fuel, plus better hydraulics and tighter steering.
