Strengths almost everything

Weaknesses if everyone remembers this is a 27hp tractor, then none. Cramped space getting your feet thru by the shifter. Slow hydraulics,which can be fixed quickly. Tippy, but we just grinded the welds off the rims and re-welded them on like 2" wider...You can buy spacer blocks for this purpose on Ebay for $250ish. Also solves the tire chain not clearing issue. Front drive gears will break if you really work it w/loader on. I knew i would be rough on it so i got the turf tires, and i still broke it @ 250hrs. I use it alot and heavy work. It will need a weight box on back poured in w/concrete. Yes i have tipped it over, my own stupidity. Built a motocross track with it.

Overall This will outperform a kabota any second. This is a 27 hp tractor it can do a whole lot. Your mower is 16 horse. It will pick up a big round bale,try that with a kabota

Overall eccellent tractor my 790 used hard 3100 HRS ... now has tranny issues .. Bought a new 3005

Strengths Good power to size ratio. Makes an excellent small tractor for areas you typically couldn't get into.

Weaknesses Front end side of the 4x4. If you try using the tractor for tough work and the front end is engaged, you'll blow the gears out of your hubs. I've just blew my second front end in 4 months. Expect to spend about a grand to repair each time.

Overall Outside of the weak front end, I really like the bugger.

Strengths Plenty of power. Good tractor. Easy starting. Have added rear work lights and rear hydraulics for a log splitter. Over 600 hours on it so far.

Weaknesses Parking brake paw is worn out. Battery box area corroded. Pins near drawbar for the 3 pt hitch broke on both sides. JD has redesigned them now and I replaced them with ones from a 3005 model for $50 each. 3pt hitch will leak down with heavy load. Loader leaks down in no time.

Overall Happy with the tractor. It does way more than I could ever ask for.

Strengths Price. Good trctor for a gear driven economy tractor. Most people who compain should have bought a larger more expensive machine. You get what you pay for. If you want an economical no frills 30hp tractor (25hp on the pto) for pushing snow, running a rototiller, brush hogging, or light loader workthis is a great tractor.

Weaknesses None for what it is. I should have probably gotten a heavier larger 40+ hp tractor considering the abuse I put her through and for which she was not designed to do.

Overall decent economy tractor. Any problems were caused by my abuse and asking too much of her.

Strengths Strong for it's size. Very capable in both 2wd and 4wd.

Weaknesses Three point hitch could have a higher weight capacity.

Weaknesses My too, front gears both side broke, very bad design,no shear pin or slip clutch or anything to prevent overloading the front axle (very easy done with front loader). The pawl for the parking brake is another very bad design. Tractor would be useless in a hilly and snowy area in a 2 wd version.

Overall I whishes I had know before about the weakness of the front end, I could have been more carrefull, because otherwise this is a very capable tractor for it size. 950hrs, only real problem was front gear,I call the parking brake pawl a nuisance.

Strengths Very robust tractor given the frame size, very easy to maneuver in tight places, great pushing power especially in 4x4 (some have complained about a weak front end, but I have had zero problems, I do understand the tractors limitations though).

Weaknesses Lightweight; easily fixed by adding ballast to the tires. Loader as purchased needs more capacity; again a fix easy enough for any do-it-yourself person with mechanical ability (be sure to load the tires or use rear ballast as this makes the loader out perform the weight of the tractor). Other than those 2, I have found nothing wrong with this tractor.

Overall This is one great little tractor, I have used it extensively for 5 years without any trouble (I did replace the parking pawl, but that was very easy). If you know the machines limitations, it will not let you down. I performed the relief valve mod shortly after purchase which made the loader much more useable, I also filled the tires with Rim guard which turned it into a tractor anyone would be happy to operate. It is one simple to operate machine especially for a gear tractor; even the Mrs. found it incredibly easy to operate.

Strengths very few

Weaknesses 2006 with 200 hrs with the bucket raised i pushed on a tree trunk to see how much more i had to dig around the trunk to remove the tree.. heard a loud snap,,axle housing broke in half,very weak castings.. not happy..

Overall small jobs only, not very well built..

Strengths Starts easy, plenty of power, bucket downforce will lift front wheels off the ground (thats not too weak). I plow snow with turf tires, no chains or loaded tires and I have never been stuck. Diesel is cooler setting behind than a gas engine, and also better on fuel than any tractor ive had or used.

Weaknesses The original battery would drain down and then corrode the terminals. I replaced it with an old battery out of my boat 2 years ago and those problems are gone.

Overall I bought this new over 9 years ago and i dont have a bad thing to say about it. Im glad i bought it. I would do exactly the same thing over again. The people at the dealership were friendly, helpful, and gave me the best deal around. If i had the money i would get a backhoe attachment for it and then it would be perfect. I have a bad back and bad knees and this 790 helped me out more than you can imagine.
