Strengths Plenty of power, easy controls, Great tractor!

Weaknesses Maybe steps on both sides would be good, but that is minor.

Overall Reliable tractor with no issues. I bought it new with 4wd, a loader and backhoe. Put in a new septic system with it, and it is the handiest tractor/backhoe I have ever used.

Overall Bought the tractor used from a dealer. I had a box blade that I have used and works strong. Also have used a 7 foot Bush Hog on this tractor and handles it with no problem even in heavy brush. The front end loader has worked great and filled a lot of holes. The 4wd has been a wonder with all the wet conditions we have had.

Strengths Very strong, If you are looking at this tractor to buy do it.

Overall I agree they do have a battery issue. The batttery needs to be better secured and last longer.overall outstanding. I purchased from the dealer in 2001.No regrets

Strengths Always starts and strong pull-Have a 2000 yr model for the last 3 years and not one problem-my land has several 50% grades and even in mud has never bogged down--this tractor is tough and I'll probably keep it in the family forever

Weaknesses needs a toolbox and a little more room near floor stick shift as I alway hit the stick when dismounting the tractor

Overall I Love It--a little JD spray paint and this tractor looks like a brand new unit

Strengths This website is wrong, the tractor that replaced the 990 is the "4005" and is nearly identical except stickers. The 990 is the cream of the Compact utility tractors. I have owned a bunch in 20 years and this is the one to have. Starts easy, Power forever, BACKHOE CLEARANCE!! Greaseable LOADER BUSINGS from the SIDES!!

Weaknesses Only one handle on fender. I wouldnt mind steps on both sides but not huge deal. Have had to do battery as well on these. ROPS does NOT FOLD. Seems only Hydrostatic tractors have them. model. The 300CX loader has less lift than the older 440 loader, could be due to cast iron mounts made in China.

Overall This tractor is still being made as the model #4005 Seems the Yanmar John deere's dont get the credit they deserve. Tons of folks have them but they never show up in any history books for more than a mere mention. Great equipment. NOTE: Get a additional>> Extra capcity loader bucket for snow!!!

Strengths Very powerful. Feels like more than 40 hp Reliable, never fails to start right up and do what is needed

Weaknesses Oil filter mounted on side of engine is messy to change, no right side step.

Overall In ten years I have only had to replace one battery and do regular maint. on it. Very good on fuel. Never had any problems at all.

Weaknesses As others have noted, I had to replace a battery once. It was the result of corrosion on the battery cables. Now I simply keep the cables & connections lithium greased and they're fine.

Overall I've had my JD990 for 4 years. I've moved an awful lot of rock, gravel, dirt, downed trees with the 430 loader. The 4WD works well. Recently had a big dump of snow. I put my 16" truck chains on the front wheels and turned the 990 into a snow mobile; there's no hill I can't climb. I'm very happy with this machine.

Strengths Possible good resale value

Weaknesses Continues to have battery problems, a lot of corrosion buildup at battery terminals, Dealer replaced cables. However the discharged battery needs occasional charging. Very aggrivating when I think of what I paid for this machine and I am sure John Deere know that is a problem with their 990's

Overall Nice strong good tractor. Has served me well except for the battery problem. For a $20,000 machine they might have provided a tool box and port side step. I never get used to the front end controls being next to my right leg

Strengths Very strong for a 40 HP. This little baby does everything I want it to do and then some. GREAT machine.

Weaknesses The only problems I have had is the battery has needed replaced three times so far but the dealer has always prorated it and backed up their products.

Overall Overall, this is a great mower for its size. We purchased the 990 new and have over 300 plus hours on it now. I brought the 990 in Jan of 2002 with a 6' JD Bushhog and then a year later I had the JD Front End Loader put on it and have loved it. Other than the battery it has given me flawless service. I am really hard on equipment and this little jewel can really take the abuse. I have had several brands over the years but since the 990 came along I will always buy JD in the future. NO I am not a dealer.......

Strengths Does everything I want. 40HP feels like more. Very solid machine.

Weaknesses None So far.

Overall Very Happy with performance.
