Strengths It has been a wonderful mower. Other than a battery and belt, trouble free. I mow at least an acre from hell and I can assure you this mower has been great. Over eight years of
Weaknesses It has been great. No weaknesses noted.

Strengths Kohler engine runs great { 430 hours} Mows great plenty of power { bottom line- I maintain my JD-Belts ,pulleys, blades, oil changes-Grease all fittings} I don't care what you have if you don't maintain it-It won't last. I mow 3 acres every week in florida with it- every 2 weeks in the winter-so it gets alot of use for a 5 year old JD I bought the automatic and love it--L110 automatic..
Weaknesses None so far during rhe 5 years i owned it.
Overall I love it-I would guess the people complaining about theirs only do gas and fill the oil-- Thats not maintenence-You have to maintain everything you buy or it don't last..

Strengths Well the engine is starting to knock so she is about done.
12 years of heavy mowing one acre twice a week, I look after my stuff so it looks like a 2 year old mower. I'll remove the deck and just use if for trailer duty and yes I'll replace the engine. Had it since 2000 and its been a good machine.
Weaknesses Little jerking on take off but I'd had WAY worse.

Strengths I've had my L100 for 4 seasons. Haven't had any problems with engine. It has gone strong for me as far as the engine. Only replaced the belts, blades, and trying to replace back tires
Weaknesses After the second season, the two back tires would always go flat within the 2nd day that I parked it. I just bought new tires at JD for 68 bucks a piece without the rim, (Yeow) and the left side tire came off easily, the right side tire I can't get off. I put a 3 jaw puller to try to pull the rim off, and I ended up breaking part of the end of the shaft. The rim is still on it, I cut the tire off and I'm going to take it to a tire place to see if they can put the tire on the rim while it is still on the shaft.
Overall Besides the tires, I have had pretty good success with this mower.

Strengths I bought my L100 new from Home Depot, and have had no major issues with it, other than belt changes and mower blade replacements.
Weaknesses Clutch/brake combo is goofy and awkward to use, with lurching starts. I wish I would have bought the hydrostatic clutch model.
Overall I have had 5 years of good service from my L100. I mow 3/4 of an acre, and the performance is worth the money.

Weaknesses Mower deck & deck lower system total junk. Home Depot had to replace the entire mower in the 1st yr. This go round I have had to have the deck welded 2 times & the lowering mechanism welded once. Yesterday one of the pulleys pulled completely through the deck.
Overall Buyer Beware!! If you want a REAL John Deere go buy one from John Deere. These are horrible knock offs.

Weaknesses Everything
Overall Junk, I've had Murrays last 5-6 times as long for 799.00. I have several old Deeres, an original 110, a 160, a 216, and a 314, with the 160 built in the 80's being the cheapest, it still beats the hell out of this L100.

Strengths
Can't think of any strengths except that everyone was impressed I had bought a "John Deere" mower.
Weaknesses I cut with it almost three seasons. First season: ok, but jerks when starting off, I hate turning loose of the steering wheel to push a button and put it in reverse at the same time. Second season: replaced battery, seat cracked, can't keep two of the tires from going flat. Third season: had deck welded where cracking, two tires still going flat, after cutting my yard the second time this year something internal to the engine suddenly became external and oil spewed all over the drive and the mower. JD says, "so sorry, warranty out."
Overall Not very happy about spending $500 per year to cut my grass with a "John Deere." My mower must have been one of the last ones of that model that rolled off the assembly line, because they immediately started building "LA" models.

It still runs. It's about 5 years old from the receipts the previous owners left with it. (Came with the house)
Weaknesses The clutch/brake combination is a horrid idea for any lawn machine. The pedal itself is in a strange place (so far I've made a separate brake pedal and shortened the original clutch one so it's actually usable). It doesn't like the cold weather starts. It backfires sometimes when starting. The shifter could use some notches or something so you know when you're in gear or between gears.
Overall It was free so I can't complain too much. It's been good to me so far. It probably wasn't designed for someone with three plus acres to mow... but it does the job. I feel it has enough power unless you want to mow in road gear. It's pulled a 1000 pound roller around pretty good other than it's too light to keep traction (nothing some concrete block and imagination can't fix!) Like others have said... it's the cheapest John Deere built so don't expect much from it.
