Overall Had approx 7 years. Changed belts once. On 3rd set of blades. only breakdown was wire to PTO. Cost 50 Bucks. Regular maintenance costs and thats it. Cut my 2 acres every week during the growing season. It is still going. Very cost effective

Strengths Reliabiltiy, ease of maintenance, quality of cut, seat comfort.
Weaknesses -Steering gear on end of steering column is made of soft metal, with no effective way to lubricate. Not an expensive part, but pain in the neck to replace.
-Plastic idler pulley. Works fine until a stick gets lodged and friction melts it. Only a $7 part but should be metal.
- Engine exhaust and mower deck a little noisy, but on a par with others lawn tractors
Overall Bought my JD L120 new in 2005. It has been an outstanding little machine for me. I've used it to mow my 1 acre yard every week during growing season (April to September down here). Have trees, hills, and rough terrain in places. Put about 50 hrs per year on the meter. Stored in shed and greased it every-other week. There are only 5 grease fittings; deck spindles are sealed. I would prefer that the spindles had grease fittings, but after 7 years with no failures I can’t argue with the design. Changed oil and filter (easy to get to) once per season, used air compressor to blow off the air filter element (also easy to get to) 2 or 3 times per season and replaced air filter element every other year. I sharpened my own blades at start of each season and replaced the blades every 2-3 years. Used leaf blower to clear grass and dust off machine and deck after every use...which probably contributed to life span of deck spindles (NOTE: don’t use a water hose, it just makes a muddy, grass packed mess and invites rust and corrodes electrical parts).
Had to replace two broken belts in all this time; one of which the neighbors broke when borrowing it to cut their 1.5 acre grossly overgrown yard while their mower was in the shop.
The original battery lasted 7 years and I just replaced it this month.
Had to replace rack and pinion gear set (wore out) and an idler pulley (melted by friction when a stick got lodged against it that I didn’t see until it was too late. The gear set is made of soft metal and open to the elements. Putting grease on it just makes matters worse because it further attracts and holds the dirt and grit. This is just a bad design on many garden tractors that should be improved; on the other hand, it’s only been replaced once. The plastic idler pulley should be made of metal. Another cost cutting design feature by JD no doubt; but again only replaced once.
The 20hp Briggs twin-cylinder engine has plenty of power on hills and while pulling a 10cu ft garden cart. Only problem at times is with traction in steep places due to those turf tires on wet grass and light weight of the tractor (~500lbs). The seat is adjustable, comfortable and allows plenty of leg room for me (6’, 155lbs).
I’ve seen the posts about transmission problems but I’ve never had a bit of trouble with mine. It has whined a little since the day I bought it, like ALL hydrostatic transmissions do, but it pulls strong to this day.
Bottom line: if you take care of maintenance and don’t abuse it, it will take care of you and your yard for years. Some folks could find a way to tear up a steel bowling ball, but with a little care (and I didn’t say babying) this machine is in my opinion as good or better than any other lawn tractor in its class.

Strengths Runs well and does the job.
Weaknesses Chinese bearings in mower deck, less than 100 hours and they are toast. I hope that north americans stop importing these offshore junk bearings, $5 for a quality replacement from any bearing supply house, why the heck does John Deere sell machines that have chinese bearings? Paint peeling on mower deck as well.
Overall Runs well and does the job,,looks nice and green. To bad about junk bearings and peeling paint

Strengths Durable and easy to fix. In five years only replaced the throttle cable and the battery once and still has original belts and blades but we do service it according to guidelines although we have not replaced spark plugs or checked valve clearance. Appreciate the clear fuel gauge, battery access, ample seat adjustment and the hour meter.
Weaknesses HORRIBLE on anything but dry, level ground. We use it all around our farm to tow a small cart and it is constantly getting stuck in the mud or on wet, slippery inclines. Deere should offer ag tire option. Chains help some but the fat front tires still won't steer it. Always starts, even down to -15 degrees. And I wish the deck would raise higher so it would clear stuff as it's a pain to take it off for the winter. Tires won't hold air long and they are a pain to reinflate if they go flat and lose bead contact.
Overall It would have a lot more stars if it had decent traction

Strengths Price was good.... green and yello looked good and it worked for a while.
Weaknesses With less then 120 hours, despite regular maintence, motor blown. Made quite the noise when things let go inside.
Overall Very disappointed in quality. Expected to have this thing for a while. Spoke with dealer and expressed my unhappiness with "disposable" mowers. He didn't seem too suprised.

Strengths I beat the hell out of this machine. Takes a lickin' and keeps on tickin'. I mow about 7 of my 40 acres with this thing, hitting rocks, etc, all the time, etc. It sits out most of the time, have a huge shop but space is precious.
Weaknesses Vent cap clogs up once in a while, but it's a simple fix. The seat has cracked up quite a bit...lose the vinyl and start using canvas.
Overall Great machine. Hey DAVE, I bought mine at Home Depot, 10 years ago, it's been the best mower I've ever had!

Strengths Comfortable ride, hydrostat drive is very conviniant and easy to use
Weaknesses P.T.O. had to be replaced twice at $150 ea.had to replace all three deck spindle assemblys because there are no grease fittings had to make majar repairs on the carberator.I tried to find a kit to change over to manuel deck engagement with no luck, ended up designing and building one myself to prevent buying another p.t.o. clutch.front wheel fell while my wife was cutting grass the second time we used the mower.
Overall Not satisfied, will not buy another one of these mowers

Strengths Cuts nice when it runs. Which is rarely.
Weaknesses Have owned this tractor for 7 years. Have replaced wiring harness 3 times. Currently need clip to attach wires to top of clutch and no one sells the clip. John Deere dealer sold me another wiring harness but it has everything but the part I needed. Purchased at HD and John Deere dealer obnoxious about doing repairs. Only has 350 hours of use on it.
Overall This is the worst piece of equipment I have ever purchased and John Deere does not stand behind it. They have had every excuse in the book. I paid $2200 for a tractor and have to cut my 1 1/2 acres with a push mower!!!
