Strengths great for power and user friendly controls

Weaknesses K46 transmission have replaced 2 , 25 hrs from new and at 50 hrs from new

Overall Dont understand how a company can get away with selling an under engineered piece of equipment for this price

Weaknesses The spindle grease fittings are not in a great position, but I replaced them with 45 degree fittings and now no problem.

Overall Overall I am pleased with the machine. I take good care of my equipment so I tend to keep things a long time. I strongly believe that you can't neglect any machine and expect it to give good service. I got the LA165 because it has the stronger K46 Tufftorq tranny and the 48" deck. In order to get that in the X300 series you are easily talking another $2500 out of pocket. My dealer seemed to be one of the few that stocks both the full "LA" line along with the "Select' series line, and he did not try to railroad me into the Select series tractor that cost an extra two grand more. The LA165 engine is a 24 Hp Briggs, which I find to be excellent--plenty of power and reliable. The machine is comfortable to drive, and the quality is right up there. For the extra two grand in my pocket, and the fact that it does just fine for my less than acre lot, the LA165 is plenty of tractor. Yhe fact that it is built in Spring Hill TN, USA is a plus for me too.

Overall Just ordered LA 165 yesterday. Reviewed to the point of information overload. Came down to Husky versus JD. JD Dealer is a little closer to home. Very disappointed about Dealer that sold me the mower. They appear that they could care less sale or no sale. I did feel lesser that I did not buy a Select Series. I will bring this up when I go back, to the Manager. This was over my budget. Mower looks perfect in the spec column. Time will tell. The LA 165 looks perfect for just mowing.

Strengths You can pay more, but why? Take it from someone who has plenty of mechanical experience and has owned more than one lawn tractor, this machine is well worth the price. Is it as strong as the X300 select series? Well, maybe not, but if you are using it to mow and to plow or blow a little snow, and occasionally tow a few implements (not ground engaging), save your money and buy the LA 165. The cut from the Edge deck is top rate. The Briggs V twin motor is smooth and runs like a swiss watch. If I was to get what I wanted on the X300 series, I would have spent another $1500 to $2000 easy.

Overall Great machine. Like anything, you get out what you put in. Don't buy this tractor if you don't plan to take care of it. But if you have any mechanical aptitude, and you know recognize what a grease fitting looks like, go for it.

Strengths Drove nice and great turning radius

Weaknesses After three weeks it began to pop the mower belt off. I cut low 1.5 inches and mower will not handle that low although it stated 1-4 inces in manual. Very poor design mower as compared to their X series which are no match. The problem appears to be a slanted back pulley on the 48 inch mower found on the LA 165 and 145.

Overall Overall not very pleased with my first experience with a J.D. but would give higher ratings for cutting and driving on their Xseries used tractors which I had the opportunity to use while they were trying to figure out the problem. There was no comparison. The X320 used with 500 hours on it was a far superior mower than the brand new LA 165 for cutting and I considered just incredible. Service was good considering my temper tantrums. In the end my tractor while awaiting a resolution, was stolen from the J.D. compound and I received a full refund.
