Strengths Liquid cooled Diesel engine is excellent. Very high torque performance compared to gas. This machine can cut through heavy, thick grass without slowing down.
Rugged, heavy duty construction. Shaft drive instead of belts. Mower deck is well built, I have no plugging up problems, even in heavy grass. Very tight turning radius, easy to mow around my trees and garden. Tough hydrostatic transmission can pull a loaded trailer full of firewood no problem. 12VDC outlet useful for my portable compressor, to pump up tires, etc. Excellent headlights & backup lights for dusk/evening mowing. Despite it's large size, the mower deck is easy to remove/re-install. With the diesel engine, there's the option to use bio fuels. Excellent starting, even very cold weather.
Very easy machine to handle. My children can handle this machine no problem, and they even argue over who's going to mow the lawn!! (go figure!)
Weaknesses Accessories, such as snow blower, blades, 3point hitch, etc. are VERY expensive.
Battery is difficult to get at.
Mower cut-off switch is too sensitive - sometimes I just shift my weight around on the seat while mowing and the mower shuts down.
Mower will not go in reverse while the mower deck is engaged without a manual override - very annoying (supposed to be a safety feature).
Hydraulic lift on the mower deck is a little slow responding for my liking. (Coming from a guy that likes high-speed video games)
Overall This is a well-built machine, intended for large acreage and other heavy uses. This machine can handle very demanding requirements where other riders wouldn't last a single season. Very much a farm/commercial duty piece of equipment. For my situation, this tractor is just the right fit, and I have not regretted the high price tag. I have had no problems at all, with no need to call the dealer, or John Deere directly about anything.
Note the intended use for this machine. If you don't need to mow alot of acres and you're other demands are light, the X495 is likely overkill; you can go with something less expensive.
