Strengths This "SCUT" can really get things done! I have a 1 acre lot and about 300ft of road to maintain. I didn't need a 35hp tractor, I needed something that wouldn't tear up the lawn, but could move dirt and replace a shovel and wheelbarrow. This SCUT does EVRYTHING I have asked it to effortlessly. Best I can tell it runs on excitement, enthusiasim and satisfaction, but occasionally it needs a bit of fuel! I have put 11 hours on it. The gauge was @ ~1/2 full when I got it, and I didn't have to put fuel in it until the 9th hour! 5 gallons filled it to the brim! I know many consider SCUTs to be glorified lawn mowers, but this little tractor can do an amazing amount of work! It is an ideal home-owner or small contractor tool. You don't need a $50k truck to tote it around, it is small enough to work in tight places and powerful enough to get things done. If you are looking for a tool to get things done, but don't need or want a full size tractor, give serious consideration to Kubota's SCUTs! I am truly amazed by what this little tractor can do!
Weaknesses As noted by others, the BX23 "stock seat" is really bad. Not bad enough to order the $400 replacement, but bad. At 6ft 3in it is a bit akward switching from "tractor mode" to "backhoe" mode w/o getting off the tractor, but this is to be expected on any SCUT, it wouldn't be a SCUT if it were bigger.
Overall I looked for a tractor for over a year. I finally found this one at a dealer about 100 miles away. I called and told the salesman what I was looking for (a 20hp to 25hp tractor with FEL, preferably used with low hours for under $10k), he responded, "I've got your tractor." A bit taken back, I asked him what he had. When I found out it was a Kubota BX23 TLB with 198 hours in like-new condition, I told him I would be there to look at it by lunch time. 30 minutes after I got there I purchased it. I have already been offered a bit more than I paid for it! I have a short-term need (~three years) during which I need ~300 hours of tractor work done to complete various projects. Including materials I figure the cost of all the projects combined would run ~$10k to pay someone else to do. By purchasing a tractor with a high resale value, I hope to get the projects done DIY for ~$5k after I re-sell the tractor. I am already saddened by the thought of eventually selling my SCUT. It is amazing how quickly you become accustomed to having a tractor standing by ready to get things done. I will likely keep the tractor considerably longer than I initially planned; it is just so darn handy!

Strengths I love how a small machine can produce such a big PUNCH ! 5 gallons of diesel will run the machine for 8 hours...continuous. The 4 wheel drive makes it operate smoothly when you have a load in the front bucket. It is small enough to work around the house. I just started adding implements and picked up a landscape rake, and a rototiler. THey both work great. It fels like i am hauling a couple of quads when i haul it. Very light weight machine for the power it has.
Weaknesses Can't find many. I too ride around with the parking brake on. I wish it had an internal slip clutch for the back PTO. I bought a tiler and had to buy a slip clutch and it extended the shaft 5 inches so i had to make special brackets for the tiller. I wish it came with better tires. I know a few other people with this machine, and we all have flats or slow leaks.
Overall THe machine is excellent. I was going to sell it after all of my work here at home and my camp was done. INstead i started a small residential backhoe business and have instaled numerous waterlines. I also do landscaping. If there is a rock i can't dig out, i simply bust it out with a smal jackhammer and remove the rock. It wil do just about anything.

Purchased From : Big Sky Tractor, Inc
Strengths Have had our BX23 for almost 2 years, have 550 hours on it. No problems, never had to take back to dealer. Just keep up on the maint. Big Sky is great to deal with.
I had a problem changing the oil filter, the first time, but got the problem solved.
We have 7 acres, nursery and greenhouse.. I don't think that there is anything this little guy can't do, if you know your limitations of size and power.
Buying this tractor was the best thing I have done.
I am going to put a thumb on the backhoe bucket and some kind of a brush attachment on the loader bucket.
Weaknesses A parking brake indicator would be great.

Implements : snowblower, tiller, mid deck mower, box drag
Purchased From : Lulich equipment
Strengths East to operate. Like the small size which makes it very nice working in small spots like the horse barn and small garden areas. Also works great with the harrow rake in the round pens. Bucket is small but still alot better that a shovel. Backhoe is great as far as operating and digging. LOVE the tiller....makes short order of ANY tilling job. Snow blower is 2nd to no one for a single phase blower. I live in Northern Wisconsin snow belt and we can get over 300 inches of snao a year and this machine barely grunts when blowing snow. The mid deck is really nice for mowing small pastures.I pull the harrow rake behing the tractor while mowing and the machine doesn't even hesitate in its performace
Weaknesses Have had alot of trouble with the dismounting and monting of backhoe. The release levers keep siezing up. have had it to dealer twice to get the release levers freed up. Also can't operate the mid deck with the backhoe on because the upper bars on the 3 point catches on the backoe deck preventing the deck from going all the way down 0i understand the BX 24 addressed this issue. Also a brake indicator light is a must. I also would like to see a bucket level indicator on the bucket somewhere. Backhoe is very nice I just wish it would go deeper. I have had trouble with lifting any large rocks ( 3' diamitor). The lift capacity is the one thing that I am most disapointed in with this unit.
Overall As far as compacts go....I call this my Lawn Tractor on Steroids. I use mine ALL the time and maybe overuse it from time to time but it never seems to let me down. Good investment. The only thing I see is that I overpaid for my unit based on everyone elses prices I see on here.

Strengths 4 X 4 a must! I should have purchased years ago. I bought 4/04. I can't tell you how many aches I saved having this machine. I am 58 now and could never have done the work this machine did for me. Backhoe is a necessity!
Weaknesses I read another review re having a brake light or buzzer alert. I have let the brake on a few times also. The seat is OK. I'm not sure the swiveling mechanism could be improved when going to use the backhoe, but maybe.
Overall I'm 100% satisfied with the BX23. Greasing it is a labor of love. The diesel fuel seems to last forever before filling. I dug a 3' deep ditch 75 yards in one job of mine. Digging out and planting bushes, trees a cinch.

Implements : BX23 backhoe and front end loader
Purchased From : Barlowequipment.com 1-606-677-2445
Strengths Forgot to add experience/ time owned , about 3 years bought new/ use 101, put front end loader up in air, lean ladder against it for stablity in middle of property and trim trees.
Weaknesses Other reviewers complain about seat, its an easy uprgade after market, alternater said to be weak, but is availabe from kbta, add your own lights to fit needs, couple of zip ties, or holes drilled ( if so inclined) and this is utility quality machine, used to dig graves by g-yards...
Overall dont be a fool and bust your back as I did befor buying one of these, even my chiropractor agrees, I hemmed and hawed over whether it was the right thing to do, and as I said previously, cheaper than and a much better investment than a Harley. This machine will last me till retirement and beyond,

Strengths Excellent machine for my small farm, and home construction, landscaping is a breeze, after my next home landscaping project, it has paid for itself, dug three koi ponds, drainage ditches, ripped and reroofed a shed alone, both removed debris and delivered them to working position , eeeasy... now use to deliver firewood to porch, and pellets to deck for pellet stove, dont play around in the snow much with it, but pick up snowblower from shed and bring up hill to garage for use, handle cement mixer and sand/concrete bags same way
Weaknesses none found yet, this machine makes all tasks easy, firewood handling, rock wall building, drag leaf trailer to road for dumping, handled more than 80,000 pounds of aggregate, sand, soil and 12 pallets of paving stones to do an entire 1200+ sq. ft. block paver job alone.use front end loader with homemade scaffold platform to do guttersand alum trim , moved overstock of 12"cmu blocks, bricks, delivered heating system into my basement, unloaded from the back of my truck, removed old same way.
Overall I do not know who would review a piece of equipment and complain about the paint chipping off of it, I use heavy equipment all day long for a utiliy, and this machine doesn't dissapoint,no regrets here, better investment than my softail standard.Makes a 125 pound man as myself a one man show, I rely on no one but myself and the machine. barlow equipment sales excellent for price/service , responds quickly to email inquiries, easy to reach and talk to on phone, and has already sold my coworkers machines without a problem. Thanks and good luck. Paul..201-802-1186

Strengths This thing is an awesome machine, I have never run out of power. Trims pretty close for such a versatile machine. Added a FEL last year, don't know how I ever lived without it! I mow around ponds, thru CRP trees.. I would really like a backhoe attachment next, do they really work well?
Weaknesses As stated in other reveiws, need a parking brake indicator!! I pulled a son's truck with 4 flat tires out of the yard, and realized the parking brake was still on. That would be about the ONLY thing I would add. Same size is great for small acreages, add the FEL and you have a manly man's machine!
Overall You can't beat this thing, lot better made, better pricing, and don't have to buy that pricey green paint.

Strengths Simple to operate!! Can handle a wide range of jobs. Quick release loader and hoe are great. If you fold the ROPS you can get it through a standard garage door. Great on fuel.
Midmount mower in great. You can't beat 0% for 3 years.
Weaknesses Seat controls are terrible. Needs a parking brake light,(my wife mowed for an hour with the brake on). Tach would be nice.
Cycle time on the loader and hoe are little slow.
Overall I've had it for 2 years and have not had any mech. problems. It's a great machine. I would recommend it to anyone. I made the mistake of letting my wife use it and now I can't get her off it.

Years of Use : New Owner (0-1 Year)
Implements : FEL, Backhoe, Blade, rake, tiller
Purchased From : Middle Field Farm Equipment
Strengths Power Steering, FEL controls, easy to manuver in tight places, family friendly, excellent for small hobby farm. I have used this machine to tackle some pretty big jobs. Keeping in mind it's a sub compact, this machine is up to the task, it just may take a little longer. Excellent financing from Kubota, 0% three years. Backhoe and FEL attachments on and off in a few minutes, and very simple to do.
Weaknesses No Horn, the kids complain about this little feature. I wish it had better lighting.
Overall I am amazed what this machine can do for it's size. I didn't look at any of the other manufactures as the dealer close to me sells Kubota. Since I have had my BX24, I have dug out stumps 16" in diameter, dug trenches to lay pipe for irrigation, scraped a 300' driveway with the blade, moved 60 ton of hardpack limestone for the driveway, used the backhoe to tear down a treefort, what seems endless hours of brushhogging, moved 12 ton of wood pellet bio fuel, and 4 cord of hard wood. Used the tiller to install a garden, put a bar on the back and several lengths of chain, it doubles as a skidder to remove trees from the woods. This machine is simple to operate, comfortable, and the real winner is the hydrostatic power steering and transmission. Reversing direction is as simple as stepping on the pedal. When moving tonage of material, you will appreciate the HST and power steering, makes the job simple and enjoyable.
