Strengths Very easy to drive/operate. Lots of power and fantastic fuel economy. Easy starting even on the coldest of days. Cab is easy to get in and out of. Easy on/off front loader. Excellent A/C and Heat. Fantastic window defrosting with the combo air defroster and heated rear glass panels. This thing is built right. Heavy steel fenders, hood etc. Loader power and speed ratio is superb. Grease and oil service locations are placed in excellent locations making it easy to do maintenance.
Weaknesses I have to dig to find any weaknesses. The only thing I could say is it's a bit expensive. Filters are a bit pricey too. It has a plastic grille in the front which I had to replace the first week I had it when a branch went into it while clearing woods. It has a metal guard but a single branch wiggled its way through. I can't blame that one on Kubota. They put nice color coded rubber hydraulic port covers to protect them from dust when the loader is off. They work nice until oil gets on them and they swell. I would like to see something done about that.
Overall Very impressed. I used to own a construction/landscaping business back in the 80's and 90's. Had lots of small to mid sized equipment, mostly John Deere. I bought my first Kubota in the mid 90's and in the next couple of years, the shop went from green to orange. Each and every employee wanted to run the Kubotas and even had a few verbal fights as of who's turn it was.(these were grown men). The reliability of the business went up and the mechanics overtime went down. (Not knocking JD. They make some VERY fine large equipment) The 4740 is one very reliable and easy to use machine. My wife and I own a horse farm and she runs the 4740 more than me. I can't keep her out of it. It's used 365 days a year and just hit 400 hours in less than 12 months without a single hitch. The loader bucket that comes with the machine seemed to me like it was a little small. I upgraded to a larger heavier duty bucket (Same bucket the L39 uses) with a replaceable cutting edge and a quick attach system and I'm glad I did. I run a seven foot 3PT finish mower and a ten foot "Pregressive" contour mower and it has more than enough power to handle them even on the hills. We have three pieces of Kubota equipment on the farm now and growing. G1900, KX161-3 and the Grand L4740HSTC-3. I have nothing to say but good things with each and not one of them has had a single problem to date. We plan on buying a Kubota RTV1100 by years end and I'm already very confident that it too will be a flawless asset to the farm...
