Strengths Havent had it long enough to find any.
Weaknesses After 2 hours of use was going down a steep hill and the brakes stared to fade till there was none at all in about 15 seconds, started flying down the hill out of control till i jumed off and rolled into a ditch. It continued down the hill picking up speed till it slammed into a drainage ditch and was destroyed. was told that a bolt in the brake adjuster was not tightened up properly and the more i pumped the brake the looser it got. Lowes was good about it and gave a new with no hassle at all.
Overall Ill see with the new one.

Strengths Very tight turning radius for being a non-zero turn mower. The body is a visually pleasing design. It is at a nice price point compared to a JD or other upper end mowers. The Briggs and Stratton 17.5 H.P.is easy start and provides plenty of power.
Weaknesses I bought a Troy-Bilt because of the name it once had, not realizing it was now built by MTD. MTD cuts too many corners and has poor deck engineering. This thing continually throws deck belts (my Ariens never did). I spend at least 25% of my time fixing this thing. And now the rear end seems to be slipping. It is a 2006 low hour machine and it should be more reliable @ this point in its life. My Ariens was 17 years old and I wish I had never gotten rid of it for this machine. When the Chinese build a Machine equal to MTD, I suspect the company will fold. The deck wheels I added makes for better mowing, but a 42" deck should have come w/ them. $77 on Ebay seemed a bit pricey for these two, cheap non- bearing wheels and brackets. Also, other than the wheel grease zerts there are no others on this machine. Zerts are not that expensive to engineer in, and greatly extend the life of moving parts. Just another MTD corner cut! My advice is to spend a little more up front and get so much more in the long run!
Overall Based on my experience I would avoid anything made by MTD, including Cub Cadet. They gobble up good companies for their name recognition and then cheapen the overall quality.

Strengths It cuts fast!
Weaknesses Oil and gas mixing. Engine was smoking on first use. Gets stuck on hills. Later engine exploded. Now I have a piece of trash. Troy-bilt has no customer service. Don't get the extended warranty from Lowe's. It won't help you. If you have engine problems, Troy-Bilt's message tells you to call engine manufacture (Briggs & Strat). Run around!!!!

Strengths B&S, shift on the go, deck and blades, Sharp turns
Weaknesses none. Owners of others that aren't mechanically inclined.
Overall Very strong b&s 17.5hp 500cc air cooled engine. cuts grass like golf course turf... I use this machine on rough ground have had no problem accept when turnin on hills, the back tires spin. Blades have chips from hitting things and still mowes great. Starts without any problems each time. I wash every inch of it even the deck, still looks new and have had no problems yet. Take care of it and it will last. Totally worth the $700! I am the second owner of this pony. I had a john deere before this and it was a lemon, it couldn't handle the rough ground and broke the transmission after one season.

Strengths NONE!!!
Weaknesses Engine exploded! Used only a few times. Lowes wants to argue about who is responsible for fixing it, troy bilt or B&S. Meanwhile, I have no mower.
Overall I wish I would have read here first. I would have not ever purchased such a piece of junk. A machine that is backed by no honorable warranty. Beware, save your thousand bucks!

Weaknesses belts will not stay on/blades turn with pto in the off position/continues to move with gear in neutral
Overall will never again buy anything with troy-bilt on it.am very displeased with this product. wish i had researched before purchasing
